Fence jobs almost always start the same way. Something changed. They got a dog. The pool inspection is coming. The neighbor put up a shed two feet from the property line. Whatever it was, the next thing that happens is a phone comes out and somebody types "fence installers near me."
What comes back is a map with three companies in it, then a wall of directory sites and lead sellers underneath. Almost every fence job in your market gets handed out in that first screen, and the companies collecting them did the work months before the homeowner ever searched.
The map box is where fence jobs get handed out
Those three businesses at the top in the little map are the Map Pack, and for a local trade like fencing it is the single most valuable spot on the internet. It sits above the organic results, it shows your star rating and your review count right there, and it gives a homeowner a call button without ever visiting a website.
Google decides those three spots on how close you are to the searcher, how complete and active your Google Business Profile is, your review count and how recent the reviews are, and whether your website supports what your profile says you do. Those are all things that can be worked on deliberately. Most fence companies have never touched any of them, which is why the same two names seem to get every job in town.
Material plus town is the search that actually converts
"Fence company" is a search. "Vinyl fence installation in Cherry Hill" is a customer. The second one has already decided what they want and roughly where they live, and there is far less competition for it.
The way to catch those searches is to stop treating your website like a brochure and start treating it like a grid. Every material you install crossed with every town you install in.
- Vinyl, wood, aluminum, chain link, and split rail each get their own page, because each one is searched by a different buyer with different questions about cost, maintenance, and lifespan.
- Every town in your install radius gets a real page, not a name in a list at the bottom of your homepage. Homeowners add their town to almost every search they make.
- Repair searches like "fence repair near me" and "fence post replacement" are their own thing, they are usually urgent, and they lead to full replacements more often than people expect.
The part that matters is that these are real pages, written like you would explain it on an estimate, not the same paragraph copied twenty times with the town swapped. Google has been catching that trick for years.
Fence demand explodes the first warm week and stays hot until the ground freezes. You cannot rank during that window, because search positions take months to build and everyone is searching at once. The companies booked solid in April are the ones that were already sitting in the map results in January. The slow months are the whole opportunity.
Reviews are the tiebreaker, every time
Two fence companies sit side by side in the map. One has 27 reviews with the newest from last year. The other has 190 with four from the last two weeks. The homeowner has never heard of either and the decision takes about two seconds.
A fence is permanent, visible from the street, and the whole neighborhood is going to see whether it was done right. That raises the stakes on a decision the homeowner is not qualified to make on technical merit, so they lean entirely on what other people in town said. Volume tells them you are established. Recent dates tell them you are still good.
Nobody leaves a review on their own, and no crew remembers to ask while they are loading the trailer. So the system asks for them automatically after every job, which builds both the count and the freshness that the map results reward.
Code driven and commercial work is the quiet money
While everyone else fights over "privacy fence," there is a whole set of searches with less competition and better margins.
Pool barrier codes are the clearest example. Homeowners with a new pool are not browsing styles, they have an inspection date and a specific height and gap requirement they need to meet. A page that plainly explains your state's pool fence code and what it means for their yard will pull those searches for years, because almost nobody bothers to write it.
The same is true of commercial and municipal work. Property managers, general contractors, and facility crews search for security fencing, commercial chain link, and temporary construction fencing, and they search in completely different language than a homeowner. If all your pages talk about backyards, none of that work can find you.
Stop renting leads you should own
Plenty of fence companies handle lead flow by buying from Angi, HomeAdvisor, or a local broker. It feels like a shortcut, and it is a treadmill.
The platform sells the same homeowner to three or four companies at once, so you are paying for the right to race your competitors to the phone and undercut each other on the same yard. The day you stop paying, the leads stop. Nothing you paid for is still yours. Meanwhile the site collecting that money is frequently the same site outranking you for your own keywords.
Search rankings compound instead. Every page, every review, and every month of profile activity builds on the last. Once you rank, the calls come only to you, and they keep arriving with no per lead fee attached. One is rent. The other is an asset in your own market.
